If you're serious about collecting Pokémon or other TCG cards, I can tell you one thing for sure: a good card storage box is not a luxury, but a must. You may not have thought about it yet, but the way you store your cards largely determines their condition and value in the long run.

Why you really can't do without it

As you know, cards are easily damaged when you put them loose in a drawer or shoe box. Think of bent corners, scratches or moisture stains. Of course, you want to prevent that — especially with rare or holo cards. A solid storage box not only protects your collection, but also provides an overview.

However, not every box is the same. Over the years I have tested all sorts of variations: from cheap plastic boxes to sturdy deck boxes and luxury suitcases. For me it is important that a box is practical, easy to stack and offers space for sleeved cards. Anything that does not meet these requirements is immediately rejected by me.

What types of storage boxes are there?

Although the selection may seem overwhelming, there are roughly five types to choose from:

  • Deckboxes – Small, handy and ideal for one deck. Easy to take with you to tournaments.
  • Plastic storage boxes – My favorite. Sturdy, stackable and suitable for large collections.
  • Luxury suitcases – With compartments, foam and locks. Perfect for those looking for extra style and security.
  • Wooden storage boxes – Look nice, but are less practical for transport.
  • Official Collector's Cases – For example from Pokémon itself. Beautiful, but often less functional.

As you can see, the choice largely depends on how you use your cards. Do you want to keep them at home? Or do you take them to swap meets or play sessions?

What should you pay attention to?

I'll be honest: most mistakes are made in choosing the format. Think carefully about how many cards you want to fit and whether you're using sleeves or toploaders. Many people buy a box that's just too small for sleeved cards — a waste of your investment.

I also recommend paying attention to the closure. Magnets are handy, but can come loose. A sturdy click closure often stays in place better. And if you have a lot of valuable cards, choose a box with a soft interior or separate compartments.

I currently use a plastic storage box with removable rows. Light, sturdy and big enough for all my sets. But again: it's all about what suits your way of collecting.
