Pokémon Graded Slabs

More and more collectors are choosing to grade there Pokémon cards. There are several reasons for this: some do it because a bib card often increases in value, others because they want extra protection for their valuable cards. And of course, there are also many people who simply think a bib card looks better and adds more appeal to their collection.

Grading is done through official grading companies such as PSA or BGS. You can submit and submit cards yourself on their websites. They often work with bundles: The more cards you send at once, the cheaper it is per card. If you only want to send a few cards, it might be smarter to do this through specialized Pokémon companies that have a grading service. They send larger batches of cards to PSA every week, and you can include your cards in the collection for a fixed fee.

At RareCards, we don't offer a grading service ourselves, but we always recommend exploring the options carefully and choosing what best suits your situation and collection.

Several grading companies are active, such as BGS and CGC, but PSA (Professional Sports Authenticator) is the best-known name within the Pokémon TCG. PSA slabs are recognised worldwide and are the easiest to trade, because most buyers and price indexes are built around PSA.

Comparing the numbers is where it often goes wrong. A PSA 10 (Gem Mint) is not the highest grade that exists. At BGS, a 9.5 is the closest equivalent to a PSA 10, and the BGS 10 with Black Label — where all four subgrades are a 10 — sits above it and generally sells for considerably more. What PSA mainly offers is reach and tradability, not the strictest standard.
