If you collect Pokémon cards, you know how important it is to store them properly. A binder is often the first and best choice. But what types of binders are there? And how do you choose the right one? In this blog I will help you on your way with clear explanations, useful tips and my top 5 favorite binder types.

What types of binders are there and what are their advantages?

There are roughly three types of binders that collectors choose from:

  • Ring binder binders: You can fill these yourself with loose insert sleeves. The advantage is that you are flexible in layout and number of pages. Disadvantage: cards can shift more quickly if the sleeves are not sturdy enough.
  • Side-load zip binders: These binders have fixed pages with sideways pockets. They close with a zipper, which protects your cards well from dust and falls. They look professional and are often used for serious collections.
  • Top-load binders: These are a little cheaper and usually have fixed pages into which you insert cards from the top. They are easy to use, but offer a little less protection.

How to choose the right binder?

As you know, the right choice depends on what you want to do with your cards. Do you want to change and rearrange often? Then a ring binder is ideal. Do you want to protect your valuable cards well and present them neatly? Then I recommend a side-load binder with a zipper.

The number of cards you want to store also plays a role. Some binders have room for 160 cards, others for 360 or even more. So think carefully about how big your collection is and how fast it grows. A good binder is an investment that you will use for a long time.

What is the most commonly used binder – and why?

The most popular choice among collectors is the 9-pocket side-load binder with zipper . (Read more about 9-pocket binders here ) This combination offers everything you are looking for: sturdy protection, clear layout (usually 360 cards divided over 20 pages) and a professional look.

I also use this for my most important sets. The sideways insertion keeps the cards in place, even when you turn the binder upside down. And the zipper prevents dust, moisture or accidents during transport.

Top 5 Best Types of Binders – And Why They Stand Out

🧵 1. Side-load zipper binder (9-pocket or 12-pocket)

  • Offers excellent protection and a luxurious appearance
  • Cards stay firmly in place
  • Completely seals against dust and moisture

🔒 2. Ring binder with loose insert pockets

  • Flexible in layout and expansion
  • Ideal for people who regularly exchange cards
  • Can be combined well with toploader covers

🗂 3. Top-load binder with fixed pages

  • Simple and affordable
  • Easy to use for beginners
  • Great for small collections

📁 4. Side-load binder without zipper

  • Like the zipper version, but slightly lighter and more compact
  • Ideal for home use
  • Often cheaper but still sturdy

💼 5. Portable binder with handle or sleeve

  • Perfect for on the go or tournaments
  • Extra protection thanks to sturdy exterior
  • Often room for accessories or sleeves

Which binder variant suits you best depends on your collection and how serious you are about it. But one thing is for sure: investing in the right binder pays off. Your cards deserve it!
