The Sword & Shield Elite Trainer Box marks the beginning of a new Pokémon TCG era. Just like the Scarlet & Violet ETBs that followed later, this release served as the starting point for a completely new card design, new mechanics, and a new generation of Pokémon. For collectors, these ETBs are interesting because they represent the first sealed product of the Sword & Shield era.

When was the Sword & Shield ETB released?

The Sword & Shield Base Set was officially released on February 7, 2020. On the same date, the Elite Trainer Boxes were also released. This makes these ETBs the very first products of the Sword & Shield era, which gives them an important place within sealed collections.

Which variants are there?

For the Sword & Shield Elite Trainer Box, there are two variants:

  • Zacian Elite Trainer Box
  • Zamazenta Elite Trainer Box

Both variants differ in:

  • Artwork of the box
  • Sleeves and accessories
  • Set color (blue for Zacian, red for Zamazenta)

Otherwise, the contents are largely identical.

Contents of the standard Sword & Shield ETB

The Sword & Shield ETB contains:

  • 8 Sword & Shield booster packs
  • 65 card sleeves featuring Zacian or Zamazenta
  • 45 Pokémon TCG Energy cards
  • 6 damage-counter dice
  • 1 competition-legal coin-flip die
  • 2 acrylic condition markers
  • A collector’s box with dividers

Additionally, each Elite Trainer Box includes a TCG Player’s Guide for the set, which provides an overview of the cards in the set.

Pokémon Center Elite Trainer Box – does it exist?

Unlike many later ETB releases, there was no Pokémon Center Elite Trainer Box variant for the Sword & Shield Base Set.

This means collectors only have the two standard ETB variants available for this set.

Price development since release

Since the release in February 2020, the prices of the Sword & Shield Elite Trainer Boxes have increased steadily.

  • Sword & Shield Zamazenta ETB

Because the Zacian variant is generally more popular, it has shown stronger price growth compared to the Zamazenta version.

Why are these ETBs interesting for collectors?

The Sword & Shield Elite Trainer Boxes have several characteristics that make them appealing for collectors:

  • First ETB of the Sword & Shield era
  • Featuring the legendary Pokémon Zacian and Zamazenta
  • Limited sealed supply over time
  • Released during the start of the 8th generation

Especially the Zacian ETB is often considered the more desirable version within sealed collections.

Conclusion

The Sword & Shield Elite Trainer Boxes are among the most important sealed products from the beginning of the Sword & Shield era. With two recognizable variants featuring Zacian and Zamazenta, these ETBs represent the launch of a new generation in the Pokémon TCG.

For collectors who focus on sealed ETBs, the Sword & Shield Base ETB is an important piece within a complete era collection.
