Pokémon x Van Gogh: Unique Art for Collectors
Share
When Pokémon and the Van Gogh Museum announced their collaboration, I knew right away that this would not be an ordinary promo. This was more than a marketing stunt. As a collector, you can see it right away: something special comes together here. Pop culture and classic art, brought together in a project that has already earned a place in collecting history.
A rare combination of art and Pokémon
As you know, Pokémon regularly seeks new creative angles. Alternate arts, collabs, limited releases – it’s all part of the game. But this collaboration went beyond a fun design.
The Van Gogh Museum celebrated its 50th anniversary. At the same time, The Pokémon Company wanted to inspire young people with Van Gogh's work. The result? Six paintings reinterpreted, with famous Pokémon in the lead roles.
The illustrations were actually displayed in the museum. They also appeared as canvas prints and merchandise. But the big hit? The Pikachu card – a collector’s item that everyone went after.
Van Gogh Pikachu: The Hype, The Value, The Truth
This card was only available by participating in an educational program at the museum. Sounds simple, but it turned out not to be.
However, the combination of limited edition and huge interest caused chaos. Within a few hours they were gone. Many fans missed out on the card, and online prices immediately went through the roof.
Today a PSA 10 sells for around €1,200-€1,500 . A PSA 9 is around €400-€500 . That difference shows how much value is attached to condition. Something you as a collector should never lose sight of.
I've held this card myself. And believe me, it doesn't feel like a regular promo. This is a piece of Pokémon and art history.

What maps and artworks have been released?
So far, only one official Pokémon card has been released from this collaboration:
-
Pikachu with Gray Felt Hat – Promo card
Based on Van Gogh's self-portrait with grey felt hat. Only available in the museum.
Value:
– Raw: €400 – €600
– PSA 9: €400 – €500
– PSA 10: €1,200 – €1,500
In addition, five illustrations were published, inspired by Van Gogh's most famous works. None of these were printed as cards, but they did appear on canvas prints , posters and other products.
Canvas prints (limited, museum quality)
-
Snorlax & Munchlax – The Potato Eaters | €150 – €250
-
Sunflora – Sunflowers | €120 – €200
-
Smeargle – The Sower | €100 – €180
-
Eevee – Landscape at Twilight | €150 – €220
-
Corviknight – Wheatfield with Crows | €130 – €200
A complete set of canvas prints, including Pikachu, can sometimes sell for $900-$1,200 . And even then, it’s hard to find everything in good condition.
Posters, puzzles, cards and notebooks
The illustrations also appeared on accessible products. Ideal for casual fans, but now also popular with collectors:
-
Posters (A3) – Original €10, now €30 – €60
-
Puzzles (500 pieces) – Original €20, now €40 – €70
-
Postcards (set of 6) – Museum price €6, now €25
-
Notebooks – Originally €8 – €12, now €25 – €35
Certainly the complete card set or original posters are becoming increasingly difficult to find.
Clothing: T-shirts and hoodies
Clothing was also released with the Van Gogh illustrations. Especially the hoodies with large prints have become collector's items:
-
T-shirts – Then €25, now average €60 – €90
-
Hoodies – Originally €60, now €120 – €180
These clothes are rarely available new anymore. Online they are often sold within a day.
Special museum guide: 'Pokémon x Van Gogh Experience'
A guide with background information on the illustrations and the story behind the project. Sold briefly, now rare.
-
Original price: €8 – €10
-
Current value: €30 – €45
For the serious collector this book is a nice addition. I have one myself, and I am glad I took it with me immediately.
Why this collaboration remains so special
Some promos are fun for a while. This one will last. Not just because of the card, but because of its cultural value. It brought generations together. Children learned about Van Gogh through Pokémon, and parents recognized his work in a new form.
As you know, that's rare in the TCG world. The Van Gogh Pikachu is already an icon. And the rest of the merchandise? Only increasing in value.
My advice? Don't see this collaboration as a hype, but as something permanent. If you still have the chance to get something from this collection — card, canvas or guide — grab it. You will not only get something valuable, but also something with a story and meaning.
