Frequently Asked Questions

Are Japanese Pokémon cards original?

Yes, all of our Japanese cards come directly from official Japanese sets from The Pokémon Company.

What's the difference between Japanese and English Pokémon cards?

The main differences:

  • Set structure: Japanese sets are usually smaller than the English ones.
  • Packs: an English pack contains 10 cards. For Japanese packs it depends on the set: a regular set has 5 cards per pack, a special set such as Pokémon Card 151 has 7, and a High Class Pack has 10. Japanese packs contain no basic energy.
  • Card back: it is clearly different. The English back has a dark blue border, the Japanese one a gold border. So you can see at a glance which version you are holding.
  • Timing: Japanese sets usually appear a few months earlier, with artworks that only reach the West later, and some never come out in English.
  • Quality: Japanese cards are known for tighter centering and sturdier card stock, which makes them popular for grading.

Are Japanese Pokémon cards playable in tournaments?

Outside Japan usually not. Play! Pokémon decides per region which card languages are allowed; in Europe those are English, French, German, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese. Japanese cards are not among them. At Regional Championships and above you may use cards in a language that is allowed in your own country. For casual play and for collecting, the language does not matter at all.

Will all sets released in Japan also be in English?

Most are, but often several months later. Some promos and exclusive sets, however, are only released in Japan.

Are the hits better in Japanese Booster Boxes?

In practice there is always something in a Japanese box. With a regular Japanese set of 30 packs, collectors almost always end up with at least one Super Rare or higher, plus a couple of Art Rares and several Double Rares per box. You do not have that floor with an English box, where everything is random. The Pokémon Company publishes no official pull rates for any language, so it is nowhere in writing, it is what comes out of thousands of opened boxes. Which card you pull exactly stays down to chance, and a Special Art Rare is never guaranteed.

Buy Japanese Pokémon Cards?

This page holds our Japanese Pokémon cards: singles and sealed products. Japanese releases come out first — a set is usually on the shelves in Japan several months before its English version.

That difference in timing is exactly why people end up with Japanese. If you do not want to wait months for a card from the newest set, the Japanese release is the only way to get it now: the same Pokémon, the same artwork, only the text is different. We have a separate page per era: Mega Evolution, Scarlet & Violet, Sword & Shield, Sun & Moon and XY.

Above you will find all our Japanese cards and products. The condition is listed with every card.

Japanese Pokémon booster box

Looking for Japanese booster boxes? Go to our booster box page and filter on Japanese to see the range. Where an English box holds 36 packs as standard, Japanese boxes come in more formats:

  • 30 booster packs
  • 20 booster packs
  • 10 booster packs
  • Deluxe booster box with 4 packs, each pack holding 35 cards

A Japanese booster pack holds 5 to 7 cards on average, against 10 to 11 in the English versions. A modern Japanese box holds at least one guaranteed Super Rare or higher; an English box gives you no such guarantee. That guarantee covers the rarity, not a specific card.

Why collectors choose Japanese cards

The game started in Japan and many sets come out there first, sometimes with promos and versions that only appear in English much later, or not at all. Japanese cards are also known for more accurate cutting, which means centring is less often a problem — exactly the point where a card fails at grading. What a card will do in future cannot be predicted; this is what holds now.
