Pokémon Booster Packs

A Pokémon booster pack is a sealed pack with a fixed make-up of cards from one set. How many cards are inside varies by language and by series, but the principle is the same everywhere: you know in advance how many cards you get and which rarities can be in there, not which ones they turn out to be.

That distinction decides why people buy packs. If you are after a specific card, you are better off with single cards. You buy a pack because the opening itself is the good part. And there is a third group: people who buy a pack from an old set and leave it closed, because once a set goes out of print the pack itself has become the collectable — no more are coming.

That depends on the language. The make-up is set differently per region, which explains why a Japanese pack looks so much thinner than an English one.

English booster packs

A standard English pack holds 10 playing cards: 6 commons, 3 uncommons and 1 rare. An energy card and a code card usually come on top of that, bringing it to 12 cards per pack. There are smaller versions as well, such as fun packs with 3 cards, Detective Pikachu packs with 2 or 4, POP Series packs with 2 and Celebrations packs with 4.

Japanese booster packs

A Japanese pack holds on average 5 to 7 cards: 3 commons, 1 uncommon and 1 rare. Fewer cards, then, but the sets are smaller too, so the odds on a specific card are not automatically lower. The exceptions are the deluxe packs with 35 cards and a guaranteed Illustration Rare, and promo packs with a single unique card.

Korean and Chinese booster packs

These follow the Japanese make-up: 5 to 7 cards with 3 commons, 1 uncommon and 1 rare. The Chinese releases also have the jumbo booster pack with 20 cards in one pack — a format you hardly come across outside China.
