What is an Elite Trainer Box (ETB)?

An Elite Trainer Box is a storage box with booster packs and playing accessories. ETBs from the Scarlet & Violet series onwards contain 9 booster packs; before that it was 8, and the very first ETB (Plasma Storm, 2013) had 7. You also get 65 card sleeves, basic energy cards, dice and damage counters, dividers and a player's guide. Sets from Scarlet & Violet onwards also have a promo card in the box.

Are hits guaranteed in an ETB?

No, the boosters in an ETB are randomly filled by The Pokémon Company. There's no guarantee of rare cards.

Are ETBs good for collecting?

Absolutely! Many collectors keep ETBs sealed because of the design and the collector value. Empty boxes are often kept too, simply because they look so good. Do keep in mind: a sealed ETB rising in value is never guaranteed. That depends on the set and on demand at that moment.

What's the difference between a regular ETB and a Pokémon Center ETB?

A Pokémon Center Elite Trainer Box is only sold through the official Pokémon Center store and is therefore scarcer. The biggest difference is the extra promo card with the Pokémon Center stamp, which you cannot get anywhere else. On top of that there are usually 11 booster packs inside instead of 9, the box design is different, and the dice and the coin are made of metal instead of plastic or cardboard.

An Elite Trainer Box, ETB for short, is a box holding booster packs plus everything you need to play: sleeves, energy cards, dice, markers and a storage box. Every set gets its own ETB, with a design that belongs to that set.

That makes an ETB the one Pokémon product that is two things at once. For a player it is a starter kit: after opening you have enough to play straight away, without buying extras. For a collector the box itself is the point — plenty of people keep the empty ETB, because the design is unique per set and nothing is added once that set goes out of production.

What is in an ETB?

The exact contents differ per box, but broadly this is always in there:

  • 8 to 10 booster packs from the matching set
  • 1 promo card, fitting the theme of the box
  • 65 card sleeves with the artwork of the set
  • 45 energy cards
  • 6 dice and 1 coin-flip die
  • 2 markers, a player's guide and a storage box with dividers

One thing worth knowing before you choose: the sleeves in an ETB are meant for playing, not for storing rare cards. If you pull a top card out of it, that one belongs in a toploader or a binder, not back in the box.
