The Pokémon TCG world is gearing up for something special. On January 30, 2026 , Ascended Heroes , the very first holiday set in the Mega Evolution series , will be released. This is immediately interesting for collectors: holiday sets are produced differently and aren't released as regular sets. This usually means a more compact product line, no booster boxes, and often a smaller total print run. In the past, this often made holiday sets harder to find, and Ascended Heroes looks set to continue that tradition.

The set construction of Ascended Heroes

Ascended Heroes is a large holiday set and includes:

  • 285+ cards
  • 20+ Mega Evolution ex cards
Confirmed names: Charizard, Gengar, Gardevoir, and Lucario
  • 15+ Trainer Cards
  • 33+ Illustration Rares (IR)
    Includes Charizard Y & Gengar
  • 12+ Ultra Rares (UR)
Mega Evolution ex, Trainers and Item, Tool and Stadium Cards
  • 8+ Special Illustration Rares (SIR)
Mega Evolution Pokémon and Supporter Cards

With over 285 cards, Ascended Heroes seems to be one of the most extensive holiday sets yet. The number of IRs and SIRs, in particular, is higher than usual, leaving plenty of room for strong artwork and popular chase cards.

Mega Evolutions make a big return

Ascended Heroes is all about Mega Evolutions, with an impressive lineup of new Mega Evolution Pokémon making their debut in the modern TCG line. Among them, Charizard Y , Dragonite , Gengar , Hawlucha , Eelektross , and several as-yet-unveiled Pokémon appear in their Mega Evolution ex-forms. Charizard Y and Gengar, in particular, stand out as potential chase cards, thanks in part to their popularity and the unique artwork often associated with holiday sets.

Japanese releases come sooner

As usual, the Japanese variants will be released earlier. The Japanese version of this set is called Mega Dream ex and will be released on November 28, 2025. In addition, cards from the Japanese Start Deck 100 Battle Collection , which will be released on December 19, 2025 , will also be included in the international Ascended Heroes set. This gives a good first impression of the artwork style, set construction, and potential rare cards we can expect in early 2026.
