Lugia-EX is central, and behind it sit three secret rares that now rank among the most expensive cards of the entire Black & White era. Thirteen years on, it is clear which cards stay at the top.

Release date and set details

Plasma Storm came out on 6 February 2013 as the eighth main set of the Black & White series. The set has 138 cards, of which the first 135 make up the main set and numbers 136 through 138 are the secret rares. That also explains the numbering above: Charizard and Blastoise carry a number higher than the set total, and those are exactly the two most expensive cards in the set. The full arts sit just below them, at 131 through 135.

The Japanese counterpart

In Japan this set appeared as Plasma Gale on 14 September 2012, almost five months before the English release of 6 February 2013. So if you collect Japanese cards, you search for Plasma Gale rather than Plasma Storm. The Charizard and Blastoise secret rares only exist in the English release, so for those you need the western set either way.

What is the most expensive card from Plasma Storm?

In raw condition the secret rare Charizard (136/135) is the most expensive card in the set, at around €990 in near mint.

In PSA 10 Charizard stays on top, but the gap becomes enormous: over €69,000 against €990 raw. That is a factor of seventy, and you only see that with cards where a mere handful of perfectly graded copies exist worldwide. At those numbers the scarcity sets the price, not the card.

What happens below that is more interesting. The Lugia-EX at 108/135 is the cheapest card in this overview at €69 raw, yet it does over €2,300 in PSA 10. That is a bigger jump than the Victini EX Full Art, which is almost twice as expensive raw but stays under five hundred euros in PSA 10. Which card is the most expensive therefore depends heavily on whether you compare singles or slabs.

Conclusion

In short, Plasma Storm has a clear top and it consists of the two secret rares. Charizard 136/135 and Blastoise 137/135 lead both raw and graded, with the Lugia EX Full Art wedged in between. Behind them, Articuno EX, Victini EX, Colress and the regular Lugia EX fill out the list with cards you can start chasing from around seventy euros.

What makes this set distinctive is how far raw and graded sit apart. At the bottom of the list you pay a few tens for a clean card, while at the top a perfect ten runs into the tens of thousands. So look carefully at what you are aiming for: if you want the set complete, the singles are surprisingly affordable. If you go for slabs, this is one of the most expensive sets of the Black & White era.
