If you collect or play Pokémon cards, you already know Jungle: the first expansion after Base Set, released on June 16, 1999. The set is all about the Pokémon that Base Set was still missing, with the three Eeveelutions Flareon, Jolteon and Vaporeon as its best known faces. There is no Charizard in this set, but the demand for its 16 Holo Rares is still strong 26 years later.

Release date and set details

Jungle came out on June 16, 1999, originally planned for August that year but moved forward after it emerged that another card manufacturer was releasing its own Pokémon cards that same summer. The set has 64 cards: numbers 1 through 16 are the Holo Rares, and those same sixteen Pokémon appear again at numbers 17 through 32 as regular, non-holographic Rares. That double system was a first for Jungle and became the standard for later English sets.

The Japanese counterpart

In Japan, this set was released as Pokémon Jungle on March 5, 1997, more than two years before the English release of June 16, 1999. The Japanese version has 48 cards versus 64 in English: the separate non-holographic Rare numbers 17 through 32 were added for the English release and did not exist yet in Japanese.

What is the most expensive card from Jungle?

In raw terms, the Holo Rare of Snorlax (11/64) is the most expensive card from Jungle, worth around €325 in near mint condition for the 1st Edition print.

In PSA 10, Snorlax remains the most expensive by far, at around €67,000 for a 1st Edition copy. Further down the ranking the picture shifts, though: Clefable (1/64) sits at the bottom of this top 9 in raw terms at around €104, but climbs to third place in PSA 10 at roughly €9,740, well above Jolteon in second place raw. Very few PSA 10 copies of Clefable exist, which drives up the graded price.

What are the pull rates for Jungle?

Data on how the original booster packs were put together shows that a Holo Rare appeared in roughly 1 out of every 3 packs, replacing the regular non-holographic Rare. With 36 packs in a booster box, that works out to an average of around 12 Holo Rares per box.

Which of the 16 possible Pokémon you pull is pure chance: there is no reliable source that breaks down the odds per specific card, such as Snorlax or Clefable. That keeps every Holo Rare from a pack a surprise, even 26 years after release.

Conclusion

In short, Jungle is the set of the Eeveelutions: Flareon, Jolteon and Vaporeon lead the more expensive half of this list, with Snorlax (11/64) beating them all as the undisputed number 1, both raw and in PSA 10. Clefable (1/64) is the most notable outlier: the cheapest of the nine in raw terms, but good for third place in PSA 10.

Jungle may be 26 years old, but demand for these Holo Rares is still strong. Anyone buying should pay close attention to the difference between the 1st Edition and the Unlimited print: for these cards that difference runs to well over double.
