What is the difference between Holo and Reverse Holo cards?

If you collect or play Pokémon cards, you’ve undoubtedly come across the terms Holo and Reverse Holo. Both have a glossy finish, but they differ significantly in how the holographic effect is applied. Yet, I see many beginning collectors confuse them. So what’s the difference between Holo and Reverse Holo cards?

What is a Holo Pokémon card?

A Holo (Holographic) Pokémon card has a glossy effect only in the illustration of the Pokémon. The rest of the card remains matte. This gives the card a luxurious look, and it makes the Pokémon itself stand out.

Features of a Holo card:

  • Only the background of the artwork has a holographic sheen.
  • Different sets have their own Holo effect, such as stars, sparkles or waves.
  • Holo cards are usually Rares or special promo cards.
  • Most modern sets are guaranteed to include a Holo Rare in a booster pack.

As you may already know, Holo cards have been one of the most sought-after variants ever since the 1999 Base Set. Think classics like Charizard Base Set Holo – a card that is still incredibly popular among collectors. That says something about the timeless appeal of this variant!

What is a Reverse Holo Pokémon card?

A Reverse Holo Pokémon card has a glossy finish on the entire surface of the card, except for the artwork. This means that the name, energy type, and text all shine, while the Pokémon itself remains matte.

Features of a Reverse Holo card:

  • Everything outside of the artwork shines, from the edges to the text.
  • They appear in Common, Uncommon, and Rare cards, meaning even the most basic cards can get a special shine.
  • Reverse Holos often have unique patterns, such as energy symbols or lines.
  • Nearly every set since the e-Series (2002) has included Reverse Holo cards as an additional collectible option.

Even though a Reverse Holo may seem less special than a Holo at first glance, don't underestimate them. In some cases, a Reverse Holo of a popular card (like Charizard, Pikachu, or Mewtwo) can be just as sought after as the regular Holo version.

Which is rarer?

There is a big difference in how often you see them. Holo cards are usually rarer, as they are only found in the Rare slot of a booster pack. A Reverse Holo can be found in almost any pack, which makes it easier to build a collection.

However, not all Reverse Holos are easy to find. Reverse Holo Rare cards are much less common than Reverse Holo Commons or Uncommons. Especially if it is a popular Pokémon, the value can be surprisingly high.

Which ones should you collect?

Which of the two is better depends on your preference. Do you want classic, rare cards with nostalgic value? Then Holo cards are the better choice. Especially older Holo cards from the early Pokémon sets are still very popular.

Want to complete a full set? Then Reverse Holo cards are a must. For collectors, it is often an extra challenge to get both the normal and Reverse Holo versions of each card. It gives your collection a nice, uniform shine!

Whatever you choose, the most important thing is that you collect what you really like. Pokémon cards should be fun, whether you collect, trade or play them.
