Base Set

Base Set is the very first set of the Pokémon Trading Card Game, released on 9 January 1999 in North America. The set holds 102 cards, 16 of them holos, and contains the cards the whole game started with: Charizard, Blastoise and Venusaur. The rules laid down here — energy cards, trainer cards, evolution lines — are still in place today.

With Base Set one thing matters more than with any other set: which print run you are holding. Three versions of the same cards exist. The 1st Edition carries a stamp beside the artwork. The Shadowless has no stamp, but is also missing the drop shadow along the right side of the frame. And the Unlimited run, by far the largest, does have that shadow. Same card, same number, but three different markets in practice. So always check the stamp and the shadow before you judge anything else.
