Evolving Skies

Evolving Skies is the seventh set in the Sword & Shield series of the Pokémon Trading Card Game and was released on 27 August 2021. The set contains 237 cards: 203 regular cards and 34 secret rares. The focus is entirely on the Eevee evolutions — every evolution appears as both a Pokémon V and a Pokémon VMAX — and the Dragon-type Pokémon return in this set after a long absence.

What Evolving Skies is best known for are the alternate art VMAX cards. Four Eevee evolutions received one: Umbreon, Glaceon, Sylveon and Leafeon. The two most famous cards in the set are the Umbreon VMAX 215/203 — better known among collectors as Moonbreon — and the Rayquaza VMAX 218/203. Both are alternate art secret rares, and those turn up on average around once every 400 to 500 booster packs. That makes a complete Evolving Skies master set one of the hardest jobs in the modern Pokémon TCG.

Three things come together here. First the Eevee evolutions: that is the most popular group of Pokémon among collectors, and this is the only set in which they all appear together as V and VMAX. Second the artwork: the alternate arts from this set are considered the finest of the Sword & Shield era, with textured foil that really makes the image light up.

Third, and perhaps most importantly: the set is no longer being printed. Sealed Evolving Skies products only come back around through the second-hand market, while demand for them has not dropped. Anyone still hoping to complete the set depends on what is left in circulation.

For collectors that mainly means one thing: what you come across from this set will not simply come back later. Worth knowing though — even with a sought-after set, an increase in value is never guaranteed.
