Fossil was released in October 1999 as the third Pokémon TCG set to come out in the West, after Base Set and Jungle. The set introduced the three legendary birds Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres for the first time, and also features well-known names like Dragonite and Gengar. Because of the set's age, cards in PSA 10 are especially scarce, which can push graded prices up sharply compared to the raw value.

In this blog we count down the Top 11 chase cards from Fossil, from number 11 to number 1. Fossil cards exist in two print runs, 1st Edition and Unlimited, often with a big price difference between the two, so for each card you'll see the raw value and the PSA 10 value for both. All amounts are in euros with the dollar amount behind them. All pricing information comes from Collectr and was retrieved in September 2026.

Release date and set details

Fossil was released on October 10, 1999 as the third English-language Pokémon TCG set, after Base Set and Jungle. The set has 62 cards: 15 Holo Rares, 15 regular Rares, 16 uncommons, and 16 commons. What makes Fossil special is that fifteen illustrations appear twice, first as a Holo Rare and then again as a regular, matte Rare with a different card number. That's exactly why Gengar appears twice in this list: as a Holo Rare at 5/62 and as a regular Rare at 20/62.

The Japanese counterpart

In Japan this set was released as Mystery of the Fossils on June 21, 1997, more than two years before the English release on October 10, 1999.

What is the most expensive card from Fossil?

In raw condition, Dragonite (4/62) is the most expensive card from Fossil: around €414 in 1st Edition and around €167 in Unlimited (near mint, September 2026).

Once you look at PSA 10, it gets more nuanced. In 1st Edition, Gengar (5/62) is clearly the most expensive at around €52,835, against around €30,689 for Dragonite. But in Unlimited that flips: there, Dragonite is more expensive at around €11,940 than Gengar's €9,920. So which card is the most expensive depends on both the print run and raw versus graded.

Conclusion

In short, Fossil has two clear front-runners that keep trading places: Dragonite (4/62) is the most expensive card in the set in raw condition in both print runs, while Gengar (5/62) brings in by far the most in PSA 10 1st Edition, although Dragonite wins that fight back in Unlimited. Behind them, Lapras, Articuno, Moltres, and Zapdos provide the best-known names in the rest of the list, and Haunter, Raichu, Ditto, Kabutops, and the regular Rare version of Gengar round out the list with cards that are still chaseable from around a hundred euros in 1st Edition.

When buying, always pay close attention to which print run you're getting: the difference between 1st Edition and Unlimited runs into several thousand euros on these cards in PSA 10, even though the cards themselves look identical without the stamp.
