Team Rocket

Team Rocket is the fifth set of the Pokémon Trading Card Game, released on 24 April 2000. It holds 83 cards and revolves entirely around the villains of the series. This is where the Dark Pokémon appeared, with Dark Charizard and Dark Blastoise as the best known examples.

Something happened in this set that has been standard ever since: the game's first secret rare. “Here Comes Team Rocket!” was given number 83/82 — a number higher than the set total. Every secret rare released since, right up to the modern alternate arts and gold cards, uses that same principle. Team Rocket is therefore the set where the idea was born that a set can be bigger than its own numbering.
